Living Room Decorating Ideas for a Cozy Atmosphere

Posted by Merie Kent on Jan 29 2009 | Decoration and Space

Everybody wants to have a living room that has a very cozy atmosphere since this is where the family members usually gather at the end of the day.  This is also the place where you receive your visitors and the first area inside the house that your visitors will see.  Because of this, it is important that you make the room inviting and cozy.

Here are some living room decorating ideas to achieve the effect that you want.

For a Large Room Dilemma

If you have a very large living room, you can break the room up in different activity sections.  For example, you can create an entertainment center in one area, with the piano serving as the focal point.  On another part of the living room, you can have the fireplace as the focal point and arrange the chairs in such a way that each person can enjoy the fireplace’s warmth, but you need to make sure that your sitting arrangement will not obstruct the normal conversation flow as well as the traffic going in and out of the area.

For a Small Room Dilemma

If a small living room is your problem, then the first thing that you should do is to throw away anything that you do not need.  This is to ensure that you have ample space for the important furniture and furnishings for the living room; plus, a cluttered living room is not comfortable for anybody.

If you have small ornaments that you still want to use as decorations, you can install wall bookcases.  This saves you precious floor space and maximizes the room’s potential as well.

For a Large Window Dilemma

There really is not much that you can do with a large window, except to maybe break it down and put a wall over it instead or cover it up with a very large bookcase.  The wall solution will cost you lots of money, while the bookcase is not really a good solution.

The best thing that you can do is to turn your disadvantage into an advantage.  Why not make this large window as your focal point?  Decorate it with a beautiful curtain and place a beautiful furniture by the window.  It can be an antique coffee table that you can dress up.  You can even place glass ornaments on the table, and when the sun’s rays hit their glass surface, the room will be lit up with dazzling colored lights.  You can even place armchairs by the window, and this can serve as a wonderful reading area.

Looking for Interior Design Advice Made Easy

Posted by Merie Kent on Jan 05 2009 | Home Decoration

Nowadays, people are more aware that a home or an office can say a lot about the personalities of those living inside the house and the person occupying the office.  For example, a young professional who is living his life to the fullest will want his apartment to look modern and cool, with clean lines and no frills.  On the other hand, a family will want their home to look inviting and comfortable.  It is quite difficult to achieve such if you have a lot of furniture and mismatched things, but with a good interior design advice, you will surely get what you want to achieve in your dwelling place.

So, where exactly can you look for interior design advices?

On the Internet

The Internet nowadays is the most popular source for everything and anything under the sun, and upon searching for interior design advice in the search engines, you will be given access to websites that offer such.  There are do-it-yourself interior design projects that you can choose from.  The articles will tell you the step-by-step process of assessing and decorating your room.  There are also websites that contain excellent interior design advices as well as photos of any part of the room, and you can take your inspiration from these photos and go from there.

If, on the other hand, you have some extra money to burn and want to hire the services of a professional interior designer, then do so.  The Internet has directories and lists of great interior designers that you can choose from.

In the Magazines

There are interior design magazines that you can browse through to get inspiration from.  These magazines also have interior design advices and articles that you can read to help you get started on your project.  Another benefit that you can get from these magazines is that they usually contain the contact information of the interior designer, so you can easily reach them.

In the Yellow Pages

The Yellow Pages is also great way to look for interior designers.  You can call them up and ask for an interior design advice for whatever part of your room that needs redecorating.  You can also make an appointment to personally visit their office.  That way, you can gauge their skills not only by the way they give interior design advices but also by their portfolio.

One good advice though when it comes to hiring the services of professional interior designers is that you should always look at their portfolio and never fail to make price comparisons between these professionals to get the best bargain.
