Redesigning Your Closet for More Space

Posted by Merie Kent on Sep 03 2011 | Decoration and Space

If it seems like you have no place to put your clothes and they are piling all over the place in your home, it might be time to redesign your closet.  There are many things you can do to create more space in your closet and reorganize so more items can fit.  Don’t live with the clutter.  It can only be frustrating and create added stress in your life.  Some of the things you can do include get rid of old items you don’t wear anymore, put in more shelves and bars, and add hanging cubbies for smaller items.

The first thing you need to do to create more space in your closet is to pull everything out of the closet, everything.  Clean it out entirely and put everything in a pile.  Go through each item and determine when the last time was that you wore it and if you really need it.  There are people who need clothes and donating these items would not only be a good thing to do, but it can also be a tax credit.  Eliminate all of the clothing you don’t want anymore, bag it up, and give it to away.

The next thing you can do to create space in a small closet is to add an additional shelf and another bar to hang up your clothes.  Clothes tend to pile around the house when your shelf is too full or you cannot fit anything else on the bar to hang them up.  An extra bar will allow you to double the amount of items you can hang up.  If you fold your pants, put them on a shelf, and need an additional shelf, put one in.  This will help you be more organized and make your closet look nicer.  As you begin to put everything back in your closet, you might even be able to find important documents you were required to have for USCIS to approve your US Green Card or your children US Visas a long time ago.

Small items don’t exactly belong in a closet if you don’t have a place to put them.  They often get lost amongst piles of clothes and can take a long time to find.  You can purchase small cubbies that hang on the bars of your closet, which allow you to store smaller items.  If you don’t have a dresser to put your smaller items like socks in, you must invest in some small cubbies for storage or build some smaller shelf spaces in your closet.  This will allow for your smaller items to not be lost amongst a mess and they will be easier to find.

Cleaning up your closet space is the best thing you can do if you find clothing piling around your home.  You might avoid putting clothes away in your closet because it is overflowing with clothing.  Once you go through your clothes and reorganize your closet, you might be surprised on how much additional space you really have.
