Redesigning Your Closet for More Space

Posted by Merie Kent on Sep 03 2011 | Decoration and Space

If it seems like you have no place to put your clothes and they are piling all over the place in your home, it might be time to redesign your closet.  There are many things you can do to create more space in your closet and reorganize so more items can fit.  Don’t live with the clutter.  It can only be frustrating and create added stress in your life.  Some of the things you can do include get rid of old items you don’t wear anymore, put in more shelves and bars, and add hanging cubbies for smaller items.

The first thing you need to do to create more space in your closet is to pull everything out of the closet, everything.  Clean it out entirely and put everything in a pile.  Go through each item and determine when the last time was that you wore it and if you really need it.  There are people who need clothes and donating these items would not only be a good thing to do, but it can also be a tax credit.  Eliminate all of the clothing you don’t want anymore, bag it up, and give it to away.

Closet

The next thing you can do to create space in a small closet is to add an additional shelf and another bar to hang up your clothes.  Clothes tend to pile around the house when your shelf is too full or you cannot fit anything else on the bar to hang them up.  An extra bar will allow you to double the amount of items you can hang up.  If you fold your pants, put them on a shelf, and need an additional shelf, put one in.  This will help you be more organized and make your closet look nicer.  As you begin to put everything back in your closet, you might even be able to find important documents you were required to have for USCIS to approve your US Green Card or your children US Visas a long time ago.

Small items don’t exactly belong in a closet if you don’t have a place to put them.  They often get lost amongst piles of clothes and can take a long time to find.  You can purchase small cubbies that hang on the bars of your closet, which allow you to store smaller items.  If you don’t have a dresser to put your smaller items like socks in, you must invest in some small cubbies for storage or build some smaller shelf spaces in your closet.  This will allow for your smaller items to not be lost amongst a mess and they will be easier to find.

Cleaning up your closet space is the best thing you can do if you find clothing piling around your home.  You might avoid putting clothes away in your closet because it is overflowing with clothing.  Once you go through your clothes and reorganize your closet, you might be surprised on how much additional space you really have.

Making Multi Functional Rooms

Posted by Merie Kent on Mar 04 2011 | Christmas Decoration Tips, Decoration and Space

People these days are constantly looking for ways to stretch everything from paychecks to living space to get the most out of them. That means that we are becoming more conscious about getting the most that we can for what we are expending whether it is in money or living space. We are no longer satisfied with the way things have been for the majority of our lives. You can surf the Internet now and fine Immigration eBooks where none existed before. This is a great way to learn how to fill out Immigration forms for folks looking to get their US Visas.

Instead of accepting that we pay full price for things people today bargain shop to get the most effective use out of the money that they make where their parents may not have done so. That goes for a lot of things in life from groceries to new cars and including furniture and wall hangings for that newly designed room or set of rooms.

You can search the Internet and find cheaper ways or faster ways to do almost anything. You can learn the most efficient way to redo a basement room or you can find an Immigration eBook that will help you get a US Visa by guiding you along the path and helping you fill in the blanks on the Immigration forms that you will need to complete.

You can do some extensive on line research and find new and exciting ways to turn your useless living space into a very useful and decorative area that you can use for anything from sleeping to entertaining and it can usually be done much cheaper than you might expect. Many times this can be accomplished by using common inexpensive items that can be found at most any store and customized to your specific needs and wants with a minimum of trouble.

You can find step by step instructions just like those found in the Immigration eBooks. You can learn every step along the path to transforming the dull and drab areas of your home into useful and colorful areas much the same way that you would follow the instructions on filling out the Immigration forms for obtaining a US Visa.

As with everything in life it is not so much a matter of following hard fast rules to the letter along the journey. It is more a matter of getting the general direction that you want to head and then taking the time to make that journey unique to your specific trip or plan.

It is possible for any number of people to look at the same basic plan or idea and for each of them to interpret those ideas differently. That would mean that for any given sets of people heading in the same general direction you will end up with as many variations on the theme as you have people that are using it. It is a simple formula and since there is no right or wrong way to get to the end of the journey.

Affordable Multi-Use Basement Family Rooms

Posted by Merie Kent on Jan 14 2011 | Decoration and Space

The basement is one of those unused and often unfinished spaces within a house that can be turned into extra living space without the cost of adding a room. However when it comes to decorating such a large and empty area, the very idea can be daunting. The family room is a great place to get away from the pressures of everyday chores. Forget the piled up laundry and baby clothes to be folded. The loads of washing newborn baby clothes and designer diaper bags for a little while, and simply put your feet up and relax in your newfound refuge.

Of course before you can enjoy the ideal basement family room there is some work to be done. For instance; if the laundry room and piles of  newborn baby clothes are downstairs  in the basement as they are in so many homes it is important to arrange a walled off area for laundry. There is nothing worse than settling down to a family night and looking over to see a pile of baby clothes and designer diaper bags waiting to be washed.

Many large basements have more than enough room to fit in a full entertainment system, the concealed laundry area, and may even be divided into sections just as a larger room upstairs might be. For instance, the entertainment area can be sectioned without the use of walls by simply arranging comfortable chairs, a nice area rug and perhaps a coffee table as a focal point in that area.  Adjustable lighting in this area can make the entertainment center the focus of the section.

For parents and guests entertainment, a bar area might be placed in a corner complete with a built in fridge. This area can feature lower lighting, bar stools and perhaps a few scattered tables for two for more intimate conversations.

Younger children need not be left out of the ideal basement family room, particularly if the area to be decorated is large. An area rug with bright primary colors and a selection of children’s toys might fit in this area perfectly. Bright lighting and colorful furniture can finish off this section.  Just like the main living area of a home, walls are not necessary to designate a purpose for an area and still keep the flow of the room and traffic.

Many homeowners make the mistake of believing they require walls to designate areas in a basement. This might be necessary in some circumstances such as to disguise the laundry area, but it is not necessary to go to the expense of putting in walls when areas of use can be designated simply by using different lighting and taking advantage of focal points instead of walls.  Spend a little time deciding how many uses your basement might accommodate then use your imagination to design the perfect multi-use basement without walls.

Learn about Interior Design Tips

Posted by Merie Kent on Mar 26 2009 | Decoration and Space

When it comes to building a house it’s the men who usually end up designing the house, leaving women to accommodate the various differences such as high cabinets or lack of storage space. There are times when it is frustrating on the part of the women, but this is where interior designing can help out. There are some tips that you can follow when it comes to designing your home to make it look cozier and appealing not only to you and your family but also to your guests. There is nothing better than remodeling your home without spending much.

Kitchen Tips

Take for example your kitchen. Ordinarily this room is separated from the rest leaving the hostess no choice but to miss out on the talks and fun in the other room. To prevent this, one idea is to make it an open area allowing both the hostess and the guests to walk back and forth. This is especially helpful since some guests prefer helping out in the kitchen. This way the hostess wouldn’t miss out on all the fun and excitement.

The Use of Curtains

Curtains are another type of accessory that you can use to make your house look homier. Since curtains are quite versatile in its use, there are some tips that you can follow when it comes to choosing the right fabric or color. Curtains that are made up of sheer fabrics are used to make the people inside see the outdoor but prevent people from the outside to look in. When it comes to putting up curtains in the living room, use colors that will help blend your furniture together. Choose fabrics that are light in color that will add to the ambience of your home. It is also important for you to choose curtains made of fire retardant materials especially when you have children at home.

Guest Room Tips

Preparing your guest room doesn’t necessarily mean you need lots of money. A simple remodeling will do wonders to your spare bedroom to make it perfect for your house guest. All you need to do is to provide your guest with a comfortable mattress. If your budget cannot afford a new one, then buy an air mattress which is almost the same. Placing clean bed sheets and providing your guest with extra linens will be highly appreciated. You should also remove useless items in the bedroom and leave only things that your house guest may use such as calendar or a clock. Make sure that the room also has adequate lighting to make it cozier for your guest. Give the room enough storage space so your guest wouldn’t have a hard time storing their things. Another essential tip when it comes to preparing your guest bedroom is to provide a bedside lamp for your guest to use at night especially when they need to do something.

Dining Room Decorating Ideas

Posted by Merie Kent on Feb 12 2009 | Decoration and Space

The dining room is a very special room in the house because this is where family members get together to share their meals and a place where special holidays like Christmases and Thanksgiving are celebrated with delicious foods and tasty wines.  This is also another part of the house which visitors get to see, especially when you hold dinner parties or prepare special meals for your friends.  For this reason, your dining room should not only include the bare necessities like the dining table and dining chairs, but it should also convey a sense of warmth and openness.

Here are some dining room decorating ideas to create a comfortable, cozy, and inviting ambience.

Strategically Placing a Mirror

A large mirror strategically placed in the dining room can brighten it up.  It can even serve as the focal point of the room, especially if you place a large ornate mirror over a hearth or hung from the wall.  You can add candles by the mirror, and the light that comes from the candle will bounce off the mirror and make the room seem cozier at night.  During the day, mirrors can make a dining room look larger than it is.

Strategically Placing Furniture

If your dining room is spacious, you could add some furniture inside the room.  This will give the room more sitting areas as well as give the room a cozy ambience, especially if you place a breakfast nook by the window or a breakfast banquette in one corner.  You can use the same fabric and the same color that your dining chairs have so that there will be continuity in the color scheme, or you can use an altogether different color scheme so as to give your dining room a new twist.  But you have to make sure though that the new color you have chosen is along the same color palette of the original color scheme so as not to make your dining room appear gaudy.

Strategically Placing Greeneries

It is a fact that greeneries do add warmth to any part of the house, so if you want to have a more inviting dining area, you can strategically place greeneries and even fresh flowers in your dining room.  The greeneries can be arranged artfully over the hearth to draw attention to the large mirror and candles, and the floral arrangements can be placed on the center of the dining table, where they can serve as centerpieces, but you have to make sure though that your floral arrangement does not obstruct anybody’s view.

Living Room Decorating Ideas for a Cozy Atmosphere

Posted by Merie Kent on Jan 29 2009 | Decoration and Space

Everybody wants to have a living room that has a very cozy atmosphere since this is where the family members usually gather at the end of the day.  This is also the place where you receive your visitors and the first area inside the house that your visitors will see.  Because of this, it is important that you make the room inviting and cozy.

Here are some living room decorating ideas to achieve the effect that you want.

For a Large Room Dilemma

If you have a very large living room, you can break the room up in different activity sections.  For example, you can create an entertainment center in one area, with the piano serving as the focal point.  On another part of the living room, you can have the fireplace as the focal point and arrange the chairs in such a way that each person can enjoy the fireplace’s warmth, but you need to make sure that your sitting arrangement will not obstruct the normal conversation flow as well as the traffic going in and out of the area.

For a Small Room Dilemma

If a small living room is your problem, then the first thing that you should do is to throw away anything that you do not need.  This is to ensure that you have ample space for the important furniture and furnishings for the living room; plus, a cluttered living room is not comfortable for anybody.

If you have small ornaments that you still want to use as decorations, you can install wall bookcases.  This saves you precious floor space and maximizes the room’s potential as well.

For a Large Window Dilemma

There really is not much that you can do with a large window, except to maybe break it down and put a wall over it instead or cover it up with a very large bookcase.  The wall solution will cost you lots of money, while the bookcase is not really a good solution.

The best thing that you can do is to turn your disadvantage into an advantage.  Why not make this large window as your focal point?  Decorate it with a beautiful curtain and place a beautiful furniture by the window.  It can be an antique coffee table that you can dress up.  You can even place glass ornaments on the table, and when the sun’s rays hit their glass surface, the room will be lit up with dazzling colored lights.  You can even place armchairs by the window, and this can serve as a wonderful reading area.

How to Choose the Right Interior Paint Colors

Posted by Merie Kent on Dec 23 2008 | Decoration and Space

Interior Paint ColorsThe interior paint colors in our homes and offices can do a lot to convey warmth and professionalism, so it is important that you choose the right interior paint color if you want to suggest such.  There are a lot of paint colors that it can become a tad bit tedious to select the perfect paint color, so before you go and select one, here are some things that you need to consider.

Consider the Size of the Room

Of course, the interior paint colors will depend on the size of the room.  If it is for a bedroom, for example, and the room is somewhat small, then you will need a paint color that will make the room seem larger.  You should know that light paint colors like pastels can brighten up a room, while darker paint colors can make it look cozier.

Consider the Function of the Room

For an office though, you can choose the color depending upon what you want to convey.  For example, you want to convey a cool professional manner, then you can consider colors from the blue, green, and violet range.  These colors are called the cool colors.  If, on the other hand, you want to convey a warm professional manner, then the paint colors perfect for your office are those in the range of orange, red, and pink.  These colors are called the warm colors.

For a room in the house, say, the kitchen, you will surely want to convey warmth and openness, so you should also choose a warm color to make the room seem comfortable, cozy and inviting.  This warm color scheme also goes well with bedroom interior paint colors.  For the entertainment area, you can choose the cool colors to make the room seem more lively and upbeat.

Consider the Colors in the Room

Considering the other colors found inside the room is very important if you want to have color coordination between your interior paint color, the theme of the room, and the things and decors inside the room.  Color coordinating these three aspects is very essential if you want to create a good flow because the right interior paint color can tie the whole theme together.

Consider the Traffic Going In and Out of a Room

You should think about the traffic going in and out of a room when choosing your interior paint color.  For rooms that have high traffic like your childrens playroom or the kitchen, choose colors that you can easily clean.

Posted by Merie Kent on Jul 23 2008 | Decoration and Space

Living Room DecorIf you live in a tight space or you have a lot of things in your home that make it look cluttered there are many ways you can design to give yourself more space. This will make the rooms look bigger and allow you to neatly put items in your home away. There are four major ways you can save space in your home effectively. Making the most of every bit of space you have can make your home look fabulous.

1. The biggest problem that people have in their home with clutter is in the closet space. You might be one of them. If you have clothes stacked all over the place and piles of things creating a disarray it can be fixed. The best way to fix a cluttered closet is by adding an extra rod. This will give you twice the space to hang items up. You can add an extra rod if you already have one. Add one half way down the closet so you have two or tier the two rods also.

2. Installing shelves is one of the most successful ways you can give your home more space. If you have piles of collectibles and things lying around it is time you put in the shelves to be able to enjoy these items. Shelves look nice and give you more room. They pick things up off of the floor and with the right shelves your room can have a real good looking design. Shelves are the best way to take advantage of small homes and make the most of your wall space.

3. Making the most of your space in your home and cleaning up the way your home looks can also be done by using storage units. You can buy storage units in most places and they are the best way to make the most out of any additional space you might have. You can place storage units under the beds, on shelves, and other places. They are stackable and fit in tight places. Storage units are an excellent solution to giving your home more space.

4. Storage units are another excellent way to make the most of your space in a tight home. Many of the units come with shelves, rods for hanging things, and more. If you live in a small home and it constantly looks like it is a mess, storage units are another great option.

Organizing your home with space savers can make your living space look much larger. You will have more room in your home and it will look fantastic. The best ways to make your home look nice is by making the best use of your walls by using shelving, storage units, extra rods in closets, and more. You will be able to better organize the collections of things you have lying around and finally display them in a better way. This is one of the best ways to give your home a makeover when your living area is small.
