Is Your Home’s Interior Adding To Your Stress?

Posted by Merie Kent on Mar 21 2010 | Home Decoration

It’s no surprise that we hear a great deal about stress lately. Researchers have linked stress to everything from high blood pressure to a reduced lifespan. However, most of us live in stress every day. Deadlines at work, green card renewal forms, family problems, and a busy social life can all contribute to a hectic pace of life that makes it hard to relax and recharge. However, while there may be things that you cannot do much about – such as illness or a stressful job – there are things that you can change in order to reduce your stress levels.

Your home’s interior, for example, is a great place to start. The interior of your home can actually be adding to your stress, especially if your home is cluttered, messy, and not designed to be relaxing. For most of us, home has not become a refuge or haven. It’s become just another place with a long to-do list. I have a friend who is currently applying to change her immigration status to citizenship status. Whenever she walks into her house, the first thing she sees is a pile of USCIS forms, waiting to be filled out. Is it any wonder that she is stressed out? We do need to be careful about the types of stress that our home might be adding to an already hectic life. Here are some common culprits:

1) Reminders of unpleasant things. Just like my friend’s USCIS immigration forms, many of us keep unpleasant reminders around the house. Maybe we keep an old sofa that reminds us of an ex-spouse. Maybe we have an entire workplace right in our living room overflowing with papers and work that needs to be handled. It’s important to make sure that your home is relaxing and comfortable. If you do need to have tax forms, work, and other such potential stressors in your home, tuck them away where they are not clearly visible. That way, the first impression your home will give is that of a haven.

2) Clutter. Clutter makes it hard to concentrate, reminds you that you still have tons of cleaning to do, and makes your home an unpleasant place to live. Try to set aside 20 minutes a day to tidy up your home of major clutter. You can even play your favorite music while you tidy. It’ll make a big difference to your comfort level.

3) Lack of little luxurious details. You don’t have to have a meditation room or fancy designer accessories in your home, but a few affordable touches can really make a big difference. Adding the sound of running water with a small fountain, adding some luxurious scented candles, and adding plenty of fluffy pillows to couches, sofas, and beds, can transform your living space from a house into a cozy home that makes you feel relaxed.

The Appropriate Computer Room Design

Posted by Merie Kent on Feb 04 2009 | Home Decoration

Your computer room need not only be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes alone, but there are still a lot of factors that you have to take into consideration when it comes to your computer room design.  So, what are these computer room design factors that you have to consider?

Electrical Outlets

Since the personal computer has a lot of accessories that you can install or add on, you need to make sure that you have ample electrical outlets that will supply the electrical needs for your computer and its accessories.  You should also put your computer desk near the electrical outlets for easy access and for you to be able to hide the wires and the cables, which can look quite messy.  You should do away with extension cords as these can be dangerous, especially if you are using a lot of computer accessories like printer and scanner and other electrical equipments like paper shredder, etc.

Cooling System

You also need to take into consideration the cooling system in your computer room design.  Remember, prolonged use of computers can lead it to overheat, so you need to have a room that is well-ventilated.  You can also have an air conditioner installed as this can regulate the room’s temperature.

Storage Space

You should also incorporate ample storage space in your computer room design because you will need space for your papers as well as for your photo papers.  This is where you will also keep your books and other important things usually found in your office.  You have to make sure though that your storage space is something where you can easily organize all your necessary things.

Child-Proof and Child-Friendly Area

Lastly, your children should also be taken into consideration when planning your computer room design.  You need to make sure that your children cannot reach heavy objects like the printer and pull it towards them.  For this reason, items such as the printer and the scanner should be placed away from the reach of your children.  This saves your children from harm and, at the same time, saves your computer equipments from getting damaged by your children’s naturally curious nature.

As for the storage space, you need to lock those storage spaces that contain harmful items like the computer ink and cartridges.

You should also make sure that the electrical outlets are kept away from their reach, so you really need to plan your computer room design to make it a child-proof and child-friendly area.

Looking for Interior Design Advice Made Easy

Posted by Merie Kent on Jan 05 2009 | Home Decoration

Nowadays, people are more aware that a home or an office can say a lot about the personalities of those living inside the house and the person occupying the office.  For example, a young professional who is living his life to the fullest will want his apartment to look modern and cool, with clean lines and no frills.  On the other hand, a family will want their home to look inviting and comfortable.  It is quite difficult to achieve such if you have a lot of furniture and mismatched things, but with a good interior design advice, you will surely get what you want to achieve in your dwelling place.

So, where exactly can you look for interior design advices?

On the Internet

The Internet nowadays is the most popular source for everything and anything under the sun, and upon searching for interior design advice in the search engines, you will be given access to websites that offer such.  There are do-it-yourself interior design projects that you can choose from.  The articles will tell you the step-by-step process of assessing and decorating your room.  There are also websites that contain excellent interior design advices as well as photos of any part of the room, and you can take your inspiration from these photos and go from there.

If, on the other hand, you have some extra money to burn and want to hire the services of a professional interior designer, then do so.  The Internet has directories and lists of great interior designers that you can choose from.

In the Magazines

There are interior design magazines that you can browse through to get inspiration from.  These magazines also have interior design advices and articles that you can read to help you get started on your project.  Another benefit that you can get from these magazines is that they usually contain the contact information of the interior designer, so you can easily reach them.

In the Yellow Pages

The Yellow Pages is also great way to look for interior designers.  You can call them up and ask for an interior design advice for whatever part of your room that needs redecorating.  You can also make an appointment to personally visit their office.  That way, you can gauge their skills not only by the way they give interior design advices but also by their portfolio.

One good advice though when it comes to hiring the services of professional interior designers is that you should always look at their portfolio and never fail to make price comparisons between these professionals to get the best bargain.

Ways to Decorate Without Breaking Your Budget

Posted by Merie Kent on May 19 2008 | Home Decoration

Home Interior DesignTrying to decorate your house creates a lot of pressure. You may see perfect homes in designer magazines or on television shows. Maybe you are trying to make over your house when all you can afford are a few fancy Votivo candles. Maybe you want to hire a professional to make over your home, but you realize quickly that interior designers cost as much as Orlando vacation packages. Don’t worry. There are many things that you can do on a budget that will transform your home rather miraculously:

1) Invest in paint. You can often buy very nice paint colors at a deep discount at your local hardware store by looking for “oops paint.” This paint is premixed by customers who later change their mind about their colors. It’s a great way to touch up one wall or one room on a budget. Even if you decide to splurge on full price paint, you will find that paint costs far less then new furniture and most other new décor items. At the same time, paint can have a very dramatic impact on your home’s appearance. Look in design magazines and books specifically related to painting your home. You’ll find that stenciling, different paint techniques, and color schemes can completely transform your home. Switch a dark dingy room to a lighter color, for example, and create the illusion of a much larger space. Painting your floors and even your furniture can make it appear that you have completely transformed your house.

2) Invest in fabric. Besides paints, fabric is another very inexpensive way to change a room’s décor. With large swatches of fabric — which you can often buy at discount or on sale at fabric stores — you can create faux canopy beds, new carpeting, and even elegant new wallpaper for your rooms. All you need is a staple gun, a hot glue gun, some sewing techniques, and some fabric. Even if you don’t know how to sew, staples and glue will get you far. You can even drape your current furniture with new fabrics for a whole new look.

3) Know where to shop. Even if your house is calling out for more drastic renovations — such as new cupboards — you can often find these for far less than retail if you know where to look. For example, try checking your local classifieds. Contractors will sometimes sell almost new cabinets and almost new appliances for a fraction of their original cost. Similarly, you can go online to look for a reduced cost item. Failing that, shop factory outlets and discount stores. A great tip: find out where contractors and real estate investors in your area shop. This is often where the deals are.

4) Get professional help for less. Sure, the services of a professional interior designer can cost a great deal, and an interior designer will generally try to convince you to get new furniture and new items for your home. However, many interior designers today offer low-cost services. For example, many interior designers offer consulting services. This allows you to get a professional to come into your home and work with what you already have in your home in order to create a better environment. For about $100, in many cases, you can get professional advice that uses your current furniture and possessions in a whole new way. It’s a low cost way to get a whole new perspective — and professional perspective at that — on your home.

Do You Need a Break From Your Décor?

Posted by Merie Kent on May 03 2008 | Home Decoration

Are your interiors wearing you down? If you are not pleased with your décor, you may rather invest in Orlando vacation packages than spend any time at home. You may feel stressed by just looking around you. There may be lots of signs that your décor is getting stale:

1) You do not look forward to entertaining, or you fuss before having company over because of the way your home looks.

2) You would rather be doing anything – working, visiting others, shopping at jewelry stores – rather than stay at home. You should look forward to letting your hair down in your own space. If you don’t, there may be something wrong.

3) You look longingly at furniture store catalogues or interior design magazines, but don’t start any projects because you assume that there is no hope for your own home. If you feel overwhelmed, you may feel tired of your décor but you may have no idea of where to start.

4) You start decorating projects – or you want to start them – but you don’t. If you are in such a rut that you don’t know where to start, your décor may be so stale that it no longer reflects your sense of style.

Even if all of the above are true for you, there are many ways that you can take a break from your décor – while still making positive changes to your interiors:

1) Don’t try to force a home makeover. If you’re tired of your interior design scheme, it will be hard for you to have an objective view about your surroundings. Don’t push yourself to start a project to make-over your home right away. A little time away from your home and away from thinking about décor will give you a much-needed fresh perspective on your house. Avoid reading décor magazines and books, avoid decorating shows, and avoid stressing about your living conditions. Simply promise yourself that at some point you will makeover your décor so that it reflects your sense of style, and then forget about it for a few weeks. Give yourself a much-needed break from worrying.

2) After taking your break from home decorating, start slowly. Rather than rushing in to getting contractors or setting up projects, give yourself some time to imagine what your home would be like if it were ideally decorated. If you were just moving in, what design decisions would you make? If money were no object, what design choices would you make? Set up a scrap book, and fill it with fabrics you like, pictures of rooms you like, and clippings from the decorating and design magazines. Get a sense of your true style before trying to put it all together.

3) Once your scrapbook is full, start creating a workable plan. If your house needs a complete overhaul, you won’t be able to get all your decorating done in a weekend or a few hours. Therefore, set a schedule as well as a budget for your decoration scheme. You may want to tackle your house one room at a time, or perhaps you want to get new furniture first, or paint first. Give yourself lots of time and make your house a work in progress rather than stressing yourself out about trying to make everything perfect all at once.

How to Decorate Your Bedroom

Posted by Merie Kent on Apr 15 2008 | Home Decoration

Bedroom DecorationCreating a wonderful bedroom does a lot more than just create a pleasant space. It creates a stress-free haven that lets you sleep more peacefully. A nice bedroom does not have to cost an arm and a leg, though. You can easily redecorate your bedroom fast and without huge cost by:

1) Lighting some candles. Low lighting, scent, and pretty candleholders create a warm, intimate mood. Plus, scented candles can take care of that musty smell that some bedrooms can get. Select some nice candlesticks and shop around for high-quality candles in scents that you love. Consider pretty candle shades to create an even more subdued light and to create added visual interest. Feel free to decorate your candle shades yourself. Simple clip on earrings can brighten up an old shade wonderfully.

2) Opening the windows. We often leave the bedroom drapes drawn, but simply opening the curtains – not to mention the window – can let in bright light and a breath of fresh air. Good ventilation in your room can also help dispel dust and mold. Sunlight can also help combat any mold in your bedroom. Often, a bedroom will look extra dingy simply because of too little light and air.

3) Putting some mementos on display. You do not have to spend a lot of money on art and trinkets. Grab some of the things that you already have – pretty costume jewelry, cards from friends, and collectibles – and display them in your room. You can purchase inexpensive frames at your local craft store. For larger items, consider shadow boxes – they look like frames but offer more space for 3-D items. If you have spent money on nice accessories at jewelry stores, why hide it away in a dusty box? Display your treasures where you can admire them.

4) Using storage items wisely. Often, bedrooms get to look cluttered because it is so tempting to relax after a long day by refusing to pick up clothes and other items. Plus, clutter in your bedroom can hide dust and mold, which can be dangerous for your health. When organizing your bedroom, think vertically. Put in shelves and tall drawers that hold lots of items. Get some bed risers to elevate your bed and create more storage space underneath. Since your bedroom is a casual place, you might want to add some pretty open boxes for quick cleanups. An open hamper near your closet can easily allow you to gather up dirty laundry. Avoid the ugly plastic bins and choose a pretty (and washable) cloth container instead.

5) Adding scent. Bedrooms can easily get stale. Adding scented sachets keeps the air and your clothing fresh. Tuck some anti-static sheets in your laundry hamper to freshen up the hamper. Rather than spraying around room sprays – which contain lots of chemicals and don’t last long – try scented candles or open jars of natural potpourri.

6) Adding mirrors. Large mirrors over a mantelpiece or on a wall capture the light effectively and create the illusion of a larger, brighter room.
